Famed Filmmaker Tyler Perry congratulated honorees at annual Genesis Women’s Shelter luncheon
DALLAS (May 27, 2016) — Best-selling author and wife of world-renowned leader Bishop T.D. Jakes, Mrs. Serita Jakes, was awarded the prestigious Jane Doe Award from the Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support organization for her work with her Starting Over ministry, which helps to rehabilitate, support and offer guidance to women and children suffering from domestic violence. The Jane Doe award recognizes women who have programs that contribute to ending domestic violence while protecting the names and faces of those affected.
The 2016 HeRO Award was also presented to National Football League Hall-Of-Famer and iconic Dallas Cowboys Quarterback, Roger Staubach. The Genesis HeRO Award recognizes men who stand against domestic violence.
During the organization’s 23rd annual luncheon, award-winning film maker Tyler Perry delivered a personal keynote address honoring Jakes and Staubach, where he spoke about the importance of knowing your worth and shed light on personally being a survivor of domestic violence and abuse. Perry also acknowledged Jakes and Staubach for their generous efforts in the continuous fight to end domestic violence.
“I stand firmly against domestic violence and speak up for those who feel they don’t have a voice or feel they don’t have a safe place to escape,” Jakes remarked. “I am deeply honored to receive such a prestigious award for this work that I do out of compassion for the women and children caught in a cycle of violence. I want to bring hope to the nameless individuals who have suffered from domestic violence in an effort to bring an end to this stain on our society.”
Previous Jane Doe Award recipients include former First Lady Laura Bush, Mary Kay, Inc., Queen Noor of Jordan and The Dallas Morning News.
Jakes’ Starting Over ministry enables women who have suffered from domestic violence to learn life skills through an eight month curriculum. The curriculum focuses on financial stability, job training, and shelter through the Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support organization, and a substantial amount of other rehabilitation efforts. Starting Over operates out of the Potter’s House of Dallas and was founded in 2014.
